Things to do...
Southern Catalonia has enough attractions to keep visitors entertained for weeks; many guests at Villa La Joia like to spend a day or two exploring and then enjoy the rest of their time relaxing at the Villa.
The nearest beaches are at L’Ametlla de Mar, Cap Roig and L'Ampolla and these can easily be reached in about 10 minutes by driving down through the country roads. Along this coast there are a number of other secluded coves and sandy beaches.
The city of Tortosa, a 25 minute drive from the villa, is capital of the Baix Ebre district and has population of over 35,000. Tortosa’s castle (La Suda) looks down on the city from a 59 metre hill and dates back to the 10th century. The castle has been restored and is now a ‘Parador’, with stunning views of the city and the River Ebro. The Cathedral, dating back to 1347 is also worth a visit and there is busy market in the town on a Monday. Further along the river is the medieval village of Miravet, where the castle was founded by the Moors, rebuilt by the Knights Templar and transformed into a fortress-monastery. It is said to be the largest fortified complex in Catalonia.
PortAvenutura - Southern Europe’s’ largest theme park has 6 themed areas - Mediterrània, Far West, Polynesia, China, México and Sésamo Aventura – and also- Ferrari Land. As well a rides to suit all ages, the Park offers up to 40 daily shows. There is plenty of parking but many guests take the 35 minute local train ride (Renfe R-16) from L’Ametlla de Mar to Salou/PortAventura.
Ebro Delta - much of this area is a National Park, as the region attracts hundreds of species of birds throughout the year. The wide beaches and dunes are popular in the summer months and canoe safaris through the wetlands can be booked locally.
Els Port National Park – just 20 minutes beyond Tortosa is the El Ports National Park, where the 1400 metre high mountains provide spectacular views of the coast. The winding road to the top of Mount Caro is not for the faint hearted, but completing part of the journey is worthwhile to catch sight of Griffon Vultures and Spanish Ibex.
Tarragona – ignore the busy port and factories on the outskirts of the city and head for the old centre which was once the Roman capital city of Iberia . There you will find the Roman amphitheatre, the elegant, ‘Ramblas’ and a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants. Another hour north brings you to Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and Spain's second largest city. Renowned for its architecture, exciting cuisine and superb shopping, the main highlights of Barcelona can be easily reached by train from L'Ametlla De Mar.
